In recent years, Sony Mobile has had to deal with several issues related to the sales figures of its smartphones, recording large losses in financial results for the entire mobile division. In the last fiscal year alone, the loss was $ 544 million. In the United States, the problem lies in the lack of availability of devices in the stores of telephone operators, while in Europe the numbers have been better, but the competition is high worldwide. Despite this, Q4 2016 has meant an increase in profits thanks to the 5.1 million smartphones sold (compared to 3.5 million in the previous quarter).
Sony revealed its latest financial results this week for the quarter ended December 31, 2016. According to the data, revenues have risen to about $ 2.143 billion from the previous quarter, but at the same time there has been a drop of 35.3% over the same period a year ago. Management has explained that this decline in revenues is due in part to lower sales in Europe and in other regions where the company has reduced its work.
Thanks to the reduction of personnel associated with the best exchange rates, the mobile division recorded an operating profit of 183 million dollars. For the future, we expect a Sony press conference scheduled for February 27 in Barcelona at the Mobile World Congress 2017, where it will present its new mid-range and high-end smartphones, the successors of the Xperia XA. We will see if this year becomes the resurrection of one of the most important brands in the smartphone market worldwide.
